Fred Graybeal, Ph.D.

Fred Graybeal is a geologist who has spent most of his 45 year career focused on base and precious metal exploration with ASARCO Incorporated, one of the largest copper producers in the United States. Dr. Graybeal retired as chief geologist of ASARCO in 2003 and now works with the U.S. Geological Survey on a porphyry copper research project in Arizona, provides consulting services, and acts as a director or advisor to several publicly-traded exploration and mining companies. He is a member of the SME, SEG, GSA, AGS, SGA, and PDAC, and has worked as a committee member for many of these groups. Dr. Graybeal has taught economic geology, served on two committees of the National Research Council, is the past vice-president of the Society of Economic Geologists, and has served on geoscience advisory boards of several universities. He is a recipient of the SME Dickerson award (recognizing professionalism and contributions to the mining industry) and the SEG Marsden award (for outstanding service to the Society). He holds an A.B. from Dartmouth College, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona.
